To give you our Sibelius music notation review as indepedent as possible we've asked several teachers to give us their feedback on specific aspects of the software.

Here are 13 comments that we have received so far...

  • From being a user of Sibelius 3 and upgrading to Sibelius 4 I've noticed a lot of difference in score menus and where things used to be - this is a slight annoyance and I don't see the reason for moving things around - Just like a supermarket after 6 months!
  • Music to Video Feature - Enjoyed this new feature but wonder if it's precise enough to use in a professional environment? Students often ask me about this resource and I cannot offer much advice since film scoring is pretty new to me as well. Pupils are interested in taking this up at College or University level and want industry-standard music software.
  • Importing Graphics - I wonder why Sibelius didn't include a feature to import JPEGs and GIFs. The TIFF import is fine for commercial publishing but maybe folk just want to print scores on their regular printers!
  • The education templates offer much more flexibility for teachers. I've found it very easy to adapt for my own music class.
  • I managed to export from Finale to Sibelius - Well, almost everything. This is a great advantage for all of my existing Finale scores when I decided to move to Sibelius.
  • There are literally hundreds of worksheets - Well done guys, this has been carefully thought out for music education.
  • The sounds from the Kontakt Player sound improved and I also noticed an addition to the sound banks.
  • Documentation has been improved greatly. Version 3 offered a pretty poor index to find things.
  • The facility to copy scores into Word is absolutely fantastic - Before, I had to ask the art department for advice, this is a breakthrough and saves a lot of time when I'm construction a lesson plan.
  • Adding a simple harmony works in most situations - I think this a great feature and it opens doors to new musical ideas. I just add it in quickly and listen to the results - can sound quite interesting at times!
  • Some of the keyboard shortcuts had changed and now I have to relearn some of them - This is a bit annoying as I was fairly fast at using them before.
  • Scanning music seems to have improved. Before, I was struggling to scan up to 4 voices.
  • I am a MAC user and have found the graphics in this software excellent for music publishing.
