Water is, for most of us, taken for granted. We use it for drinking, bathing, showering, brushing our teeth, making tea / coffee, washing dishes, dishwasher machines, washing machines and watering the plants. Of course, the list can include much more.
To save water is important and there are a number of ways in which we can do this:
The Bathroom
- Having a shower uses about one third of the water a bath uses.
- Brushing your teeth - don't turn the tap and start brushing, wait until you're ready to rinse!
- Toilet flushing - Is it really necessary to flush this time?
The Kitchen
- If you have a dishwasher - fill it right up before using, select economy wash.
- If you wash dishes by hand then consider having a basin of cold water to rinse the dishes before hanging them up to dry. This is a better way to save water than
to rinse each item under the tap.
- When boiling a kettle - fill up only what is required. It's also much quicker to bring the kettle to the boil.
- When cooking with hot water i.e. vegetables - don't overfill the pot with water.
- Excess or unused cooking water or from the kettle can be used to water your household plants!
The Garden
- While we enjoy keeping our cars clean and shiny its important that we don't become fanatical. Try to break the habit of a regular car wash.
- Hosing the garden can help our plants and trees grow. If the garden is really dry only water at dawn or dusk.
- Fix leaking hoses, you would be amazed at how much water is lost over a period of time.
