MSN - Windows Live Messenger - How to Use

MSN Messenger or Live Messenger as it's now called is great for communicating with your friends and family online. Not only can you see them if you have a webcam but you can also talk, exchange files, look and even edit on the other persons computer as well as play games, send a video message, make a telephone call etc. It's a truly fantastic piece of software and costs nothing.

First, you'll need to Download Windows Live Messenger to get started.
Second, setting up a hotmail account if you don't already have one.

  • After installing Windows Live Messenger log-in and make sure you are connected to the internet.
  • Find a friend - Open your Messenger by double-clicking the green man icon at the bottom right of your screen.
  • Enter the name of someone you are looking for or about to add as a contact into the rectangular search box, or click the green man with the plus sign to Add a contact.
  • Enter their Instant Message e-mail address
  • Select the 'Type a personal invitation' if you want to send a personal message - Often better to do this - they might think it's someone cold - spamming them (If there's such a phrase!).
  • Select Save - A message will be sent to your new contact.
Sending a file with Windows Live Messenger
  • Sign-In if you are not already signed in to your Messenger.
  • Double-click on your contact if it displays they are online.
  • From the Actions menu select Send a Single File. The file will be pending until the contact accepts the file transfer - DONE!
Viewing / Editing your contacts computer desktop - great for fixing someone's software problems or vice versa. Any place, any country!
  • Double-click on your contact if they are online.
  • Get your contact to open their Actions menu and select Request Remote Assistance
  • Close down any large applications on your machine - Not Windows Live Messenger. This may help speed.
  • When you have a visual of your contacts desktop click on the Take Control button (top left). A message will appear on your contacts screen saying that you want to take control and ask permission.
  • After granting permission you will be able to view / edit your contacts machine. A brilliant feature!
