How annoying is SPAM in your e-mail? Having to plough through those uninvited messages from junk mailing lists. Well, here's a way to cut down on most of the SPAM and filtering it into your Deleted Items Bin which will delete them when you close down Outlook Express.
Firstly, if you are lucky enough to receive the e-mail with the subject heading including the word SPAM written like that or written as [SPAM] then you can be sure that you're service provider has had some intervention before the
message has been downloaded to your mailbox. This is a huge help since you'll see below - we can filter that subject word into any folder you want - namely, the Deleted Items folder!
- Open Outlook Express if you don't have it open and see if there is any SPAM in your mailbox which has a common word included in the subject heading - namely SPAM.
- Go to the Tools menu at the top of the page and select Message Rules then Mail
- You'll now see the Message Rules window - click on New Mail Rule. You have 3 areas to complete
- Where it says - Select the Conditions for your rule: - select - Where the Subject line contains specific words.
- Where it says - Select the Actions for your rule: - select - Move it to the specified folder
- Where it says - Rule Description (click on an underlined value to edit it) - click on the blue hyperlinks and change to the following:
contains specific words - enter [SPAM], or whatever word is most common in your subject headings when you receive SPAM. Then click on Add, then OK
On the next line which says - Move it to the specified folder - select the underlined specified word and locate your Deleted Items folder from within the tree menu of your Local folders
- Under the heading - Name of the rule: Give your filter a meaningful name so that you can see what it is next time you view this filter. Call it something like SPAM filter.
- Click on OK when you're finished.
Any emails received which contain the words you have entered into your filter will now be directed to your Deleted Items folder.
Now, you may be wondering why I didn't select Delete from Server from the filter menu. I choose to do this because occasionally I receive emails from my friends which have the SPAM heading in their subject heading. This is quite uncommon but does happen from time to time so I choose to filter my emails into a folder where I can take a quick glance and then confidently know that I haven't deleted any messages from friends.
TIP: Now that you know how to filter a message to your bin you can also filter your friends or company emails into ANY specific folder. This is very handy of you're an email junkie like myself.
Simply select your Mail Rules menu again and instead of the Subject heading being selected select the Where the From line contains people, Move it to the specified folder and a folder of your choice where they will be directed.
If you want to setup a NEW Folder
Right-click over your Local Folders menu on the left-hand side and select New Folder - give it a name. Use this name when you are setting up your filter and select the folder when applying Rule 3!
Happy Filtering!
