Setting up Eudora to use as your e-mail program
Eudora can handle multiple e-mail 'personalities' meaning that several people can you use the same software on one machine, each person sending and receiving into their own e-mail box.
As well as setting up individual e-mail accounts you can have additional signatures, filtering into various folders and an excellent security feature which can stop viruses entering your computer.
If you've setup Eudora from its inception onto your computer you might have followed a setup Wizard, in which case you will have been
prompted for various information which you should know or can lay your hands on to setup your account.
If you've entered wrong information don't despair - all settings are editable and we'll look at setting up an account or even editing an
existing account to get your e-mail operational.
Before we start, you should have already received or know your e-mail information from your ISP or web domain company. The big picture is this - we are using Eudora
to login to your e-mail account from wherever it may be and collect your mail. When you reply to this mail it will be transferred to your ISP or domain company seamlessly then onto the person
you are writing to. Eudora is merely an interface for reading and writing e-mail. Of course, there are many features which Eudora can provide as a very sophisticated e-mail program.
Setting up a new e-mail personality or correcting an existing entry:
- Open Eudora
- Go to the Tools Menu and select Personalities
- If the personalities menu contains a <Dominant> entry this is ok, there must be an e-mail which is the dominant e-mail address. Right-click on the Dominant text
and select Properties.
- Under the Generic Properties enter your real name...Ha, this question always makes me laugh!
- E-mail Address - If you've subscribed to e-mail from an ISP then you should have all of the information from them regarding your e-mail account.
- Username - Enter your e-mail address
- SMTP Server - You may have to try a couple of things here depending on your ISP's settings. e.g. Your ISP may have setup provision for catching SPAM in which case they would like to control this setting.
For example, if your ISP is Telia then settings for this would be mailout.telia.com. If you are having trouble finding out simply contact your ISP and tell them you are setting up an e-mail account on your computer with Eudora.
- Now click on the Incoming Mail and enter the Incoming Server or POP3 settings. Again, you should have this info.
- Close down Eudora and open it - you will be prompted for your e-mail password. Enter it to collect your mail, you should only have to do this once.
Setting Up a Personal Signature
Adding a signature to your e-mail gives a professional look to your e-mails.
- Open the Tools menu and select Signatures
- The Signature Tab should open - right-click your mouse over the white area under the Signatures and select New
- Enter a Signature name in the pop-up box.
- Now you can enter all of your signature information:
Name
Position
Contact Tel
Fax
website
Marketing stuff etc...
- You may also wish to insert some space at the top so that the information is not too close to your message every time you send an email.
- When you've finished select the File Menu and then Save
- Ok, now go back to your Personalites - Tools Menu and select Personalities
- Right-click on your dominant or other entry and select properties
- Under the Default Signature entry select your new Signature - Click OK to complete.
Now type a new e-mail and see your new signature automatically be inserted into the e-mail.
TIP: You might want to go back to your signature and tweak it a little - insert some space from the top of the signature, also try changing the color to grey so that it's not so prominent but still gives a professional look to your e-mails!
