Create an MP3 file easily with Wavelab for use on your website
or to play with a media player.

Creating an MP3 file with Wavelab and most other audio software programs is relatively easy.

Firstly, using copyrighted audio on any website - whatever the length of music sample must require permission from the recording company, artiste(s) etc. Contact the MCPS for advice or for classical recordings - a good source is Naxos

Wavelab - This tutorial applies to most versions of Wavelab - Other audio software will have similar settings and actions. You will learn how to import a CD track into Wavelab and create an MP3.

  • Open Wavelab
  • Insert an audio CD into your CD-ROM drive, if a pop window opens trying to play the audio CD close the window.
  • From the File menu select Open then Import Audio CD Tracks...
  • The window should look like the following:
    Import Audio CD Track Window
  • You can audition a track by selecting it then selecting the play button.
  • To import a track - drag a track onto the grey area outside the import audio cd track window. This is the quick way! The slow way is to click on the Save button.
  • You can close the import window when you have imported your track or tracks.
Editing a WAV file - Let's assume you want to edit this WAV file and take a 30 second excerpt from it. The excerpt will start from the first 10 seconds of the audio track and finish 30 seconds later.
  • In the recording track you will see the main window containing an audio wave file and a smaller window above. The window above gives you an overall view of where exactly you are at any given point in the playback of the file.
  • Using the main window put your mouse cursor over the bar just above the main wave file - the grey area where the seconds are displayed. See diagram below:
  • As you click and hold your mouse over this time line you will see 4 arrows - You can drag the green play head to any point in the audio file. Pressing play will play from this point.
  • After you have selected the start point right-click your mouse and select Drop Marker - A marker will now drop onto the timeline. You can also drag this to a more exact position.
  • Select the end point where you want the audio to end. Drag the large grey slider at the bottom of the audio window to scroll through the track. Click on the timeline again and drop another marker.
  • Between the 2 markers move your mouse to the middle of the audio track and double-click (This makes sure you select the left and right channels). See diagram below:
selecting left and right channels of the audio track
  • Now hold your mouse down over the black area of the selected track and drag to a grey area of the Wavelab window - away from the existing audio track. You may have to resize the windows to do this.
    Saving as an MP3
  • Open the File menu.
  • Select Save special (wave) / Encode (MP3) or Ctrl + E
  • Various settings of quality are available - You may have to experiment. Here is a typical setting to use for high quality: Under the constant bit rate option select 320 kbps 44100 Hz Stereo.
  • Under the Method heading select Highest Quality (slowest) then click OK
  • That's it! You've now created an MP3!
