Audacity
Audacity is a multi-track audio recording and editing software package which is open source and is available for many different computer platforms including PC, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux.
Some of Audacitys features include:
- Recording up to 16 audio channels. simultaneously (if your hardware is capable of this).
- The ability to dub over existing audio tracks.
- Import various audio formats for editing.
- Export various audio formats.
- Exceptionally fast editing for larger audio files.
- Fading the audio with envelope tools.
- Add FX to recordings including changing the pitch / tempo / compression / equalization and much more…
- Record at up to rates of 32 bit.
- The ability to mix various audio tracks whose sampling rates are different.
- Add more fx from various libraries.
Audacity runs particularly fast on any platform and is considered a professional application by many users.
Audacity Limitations
Although audacity is FREE there are some limitations:
- You cannot add FX as a plug-in and change it at a later point in time
- While adding an effect you effectively burn it into the audio
- There is no control of individual volumes or other pan controls throughout the audio track only a master controls for each track
