With Sibelius 3 or 4 you can print and publish your scores to professional publishing quality. Sibelius notation software exports as a graphic which can then be
imported to a publishing program like Adobe Illustrator and prepared for commercial publication. As well as professional scores you can also print out scores to a high standard from you're regular
printer.
Many other notation programs, I care not to mention, have difficulty in producing scores to this standard. Sibelius have pushed the boat out on
this one and I have personally used this feature to publish several music publications.
Let's dive straight in and find out how easy it is:
- In this example I will be using Sibelius 3 and Illustrator - PC Version
- Open Sibelius and select a score you would like to use (I will be using Sibelius 3, so some menus might be in a slightly different location if you're using version 4).
- Select the 'File Menu' and then 'Save as Graphics'.
- You will now see a large choice of image formats - select Adobe Illustrator (EPS)
for you to copy.
- Below is a snapshot of my screen.
- Copy those settings and then save it to a destination where you can find it easily.
- You're now finished in Sibelius! Close the program and open Illustrator.
Here is a snapshot of my screen:
Ok, so that's basically it. I open the newly created EPS file into Illustrator and save all my files as EPS, CMYK Color and at 300DPI (dots per inch). Within Illustrator you have total control of the page layout - Title fonts,
page numbering, margins etc. It's good to import one score, create this is a template with page number 1, title etc. When
you import your next score i.e. page 2 - just change the page number to '2', title etc and SAVE as page2.EPS...etc. etc.
Illustrator is a printer-friendly standard program which will allow you to save your work - ready for the printers.
If you are considering publishing a book consider having it publish ready before going to the printers. I would recommend a program like Quark-Express which
handles lots of pages layed out together. A program like this is a true publishing software package.
Plus, you can have you're musical scores exactly the way you want with additional graphics, notes, images etc.
